So how do auxetic materials work?

If you stretch a piece of bungee cord...

But if you wrap a cord around the bungee...

When two wrapped fibres are paired up, an auxetic structure is formed.

The wrapped cords can be combined into bundles...

...it just gets thinner

and then stretch it -
it effectively gets wider...

..which also get fatter when stretched
